Southwest monsoon is unlikely to make its arrival in Odisha so soon. It hit Kerala after a week-long delay on Saturday. No specific date has been given by the IM department for Odisha. But a week’s delay is certainly on the cards.

“At present, there is no sign of the onset of monsoon in Odisha and a clear picture is likely to emerge in a day or two,”said H R Biswas, Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre. Pointing out that there was no direct link between the monsoons arrival in Kerala and Odisha, Biswas said, “It all depends on the activity of the monsoon current and wind speed that help in its movement.”

According to Biswas, the monsoon is unlikely to hit Odisha in the next four -five days and no specific date has been announced about its arrival. The monsoon usually makes an onset in Odisha by June 10.

It might reach South Odisha around June 16 or 17,” Sahu said.

The delay in the arrival of monsoon is attributed cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep area and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea which is very likely to form into a depression in next 48 hours.

According to Private weather forecaster Skymet, the low pressure was responsible for onset of monsoon in Kerala on June; 8 but may prove detrimental for monsoon surge all over the country.
