Manipur Assembly is all set to undergo a floor test today in which MLAs will be voting on a confidence motion moved by CM N Biren Singh.
National Parties BJP and Congress have asked their respective MLAs to remain present in the Assembly and vote as per their party line. The floor test came into consideration after three MLAs of the ruling party BJP resigned in June and joined Congress. Similarly, four MLAs of the National People’s Party (NPP), one independent MLA and one MLA from Trinamool Congress (TMC) also withdrew their support to BJP.
Out of the 60-membered seats, 53 remain occupied after the resignation of three legislators and disqualification of four members under the anti-defection law.
In 2017 Assembly elections, BJP won and party candidate N Biren Singh was sworn in as the CM. BJP won 21 seats and Congress got hold of 28 seats. At present, four MLAs from Naga People’s Front (NPF) and one legislator from Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) lend their support to BJP. With three MLAs resigning, BJP now has the support of 18 legialators and five MLAs.
