The significant depression in the Bay of Bengal has developed into a cyclonic storm. Dana is now advancing towards the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal. The latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that the storm is expected to make landfall between Bhitarkanika Park and Dhamra Port on Friday, October 25.

In response to the impending storm, the Meteorological department has issued alerts for heavy rainfall across several districts in the states. Consequently, approximately one million individuals residing in coastal regions vulnerable to the cyclone are being relocated to relief camps.

The governments of Odisha and West Bengal, along with the Coast Guard, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other emergency services are on high alert. All educational institutions in the coastal districts of both states have been closed and evacuation procedures are underway in areas anticipated to be severely affected by the cyclone.

The depression, which intensified into a deep depression on Tuesday evening, is projected to escalate into a severe cyclonic storm, with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 110 kmph, potentially gusting up to 120 kmph, as per the IMD’s forecast.

Government authorities and rescue teams have initiated the evacuation of individuals from regions anticipated to be most severely impacted by the cyclone. In preparation for the relocation of approximately 1 million people, various multipurpose cyclone shelters, flood shelters and other facilities have been designated and readied to serve as temporary relief camps.

Suresh Pujari, Minister of Revenue and Disaster Management, Government of Odisha, stated that provisions have been arranged for food, potable water, lighting, sanitation and health services for those being relocated to these shelters.

The India Meteorological Department has projected that fourteen districts in Odisha are expected to experience significant effects from cyclone Dana, including Angul, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Ganjam and Mayurbhanj.

Bhubaneswar Airport will be closed from 5 PM today until 9 AM on October 25 due to the severe conditions associated with the cyclone.
