Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Deoranjan Kumar Singh briefed the media on the status of cyclone ‘Dana’ and the state government’s preparedness on the same, immediately after a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, this evening.

The meeting held at Rajiv Bhawan, the HQs of Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), was attended by the SRC, Secretary of all the departments, Director IMD, DG Police and DG Fire Services along with the Collectors of the concerned districts.

After the meeting, the SRC told the media that, due to the possible impact of the cyclonic storm, there will be heavy to very heavy rain in some parts of the state with a focus on the coastal districts, from 23rd to 25th of October.

So, the state government has alerted all the district collectors to take adequate steps towards mitigation of the disaster. “The government has always the vision for ‘zero casualty’ during such events”, he added.

The SRC further informed that, the impact of the very heavy rain will be seen in the coastal districts like Puri, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur. Similarly, other districts like Cuttack, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj along with Gajapati, Kandhmal and Nayagarh are also alerted for heavy rain due to the impact of the same.

As per the report of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone may hit Odisha coast on 24th after which it would be clear that where it would take the shape of cyclonic storm or depression.

The SRC appealed the media to give update to the public from time to time with information from the right sources. “We should take all care not to panic the people at this hour”, he advised.

Updates:

  • Special Bulletin has been received from IMD today regarding cyclonic disturbance likely to develop over Bay of Bengal.
  • A low-Pressure Area is very likely to form over the East -Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea during next 24 hours.
  • In this connection, concerned Districts have been instructed to remain in preparedness.
  • Fishermen warning have been issued. Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea off Odisha Coast and adjoining North Bay of Bengal during 21st to 26th October, 2024.
  • Districts & concerned Departments have been instructed to operate control room on 24×7 basis.
  • Cyclone shelters are to be kept in readiness. Ensure provision of drinking water during and lighting arrangement.
  • Evacuation plan of vulnerable people to be in readiness.

Advisories to the Field Officials:

  • Districts under red, orange & yellow warning to remain in readiness to meet any eventuality particularly water logging/ landslide in hilly areas.
  • Continuous vigil of low-lying areas, dewatering wherever required including urban areas may be taken up.
  • Avoid movement in affected areas, stay in safe place.
  • Water logging in underpass road and occasional reduction of visibility causing traffic congestion in urban areas.
  • Postponed fertilizer/chemicals application in agricultural field, keep livestock in safe place.
  • Advice for fishermen to be strictly implemented.
  • Man & material to be pre-positioned.
  • District Collectors have been instructed to hold meeting at their end in tomorrow morning and send their requirements about deployment of ODRAF, Fire and NDRF units.
  • Pregnant women whose EDD fall in next two weeks are to be shifted to nearest hospitals.
  • Public has been advised to be in alert but need not panic.
