Sabyasachi Panda, a prominent Maoist leader currently serving a life sentence at Berhampur Circle Jail, has indicated his intention to pursue a Master’s degree in Public Administration through the Odisha State Open University (OSOU) this year.

Panda, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) two years prior, is one of six inmates who have applied for the two-year correspondence program at OSOU, according to a senior jail official.

This group comprises four convicts, including the 55-year-old Panda, along with two undertrial prisoners. “We have submitted the necessary documents for these inmates to enroll in the MA program. Upon acceptance, they will receive study materials and will prepare for their examinations independently,” stated a senior superintendent of Berhampur Circle Jail.

Panda was apprehended on July 18, 2014, in Berhampur and has been imprisoned due to his involvement in various Maoist-related offenses in Odisha’s Maoist-affected regions. A local court has sentenced him to life imprisonment for engaging in acts of war against the state.
