Directive in response to the recent assault
on an army officer and his fiancée
that occurred at a police station
OdishaPlus Bureau
The state government has announced a specific Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the installation of CCTVs in all police stations across Odisha, with a deadline set for March 31, 2025. The Advocate General conveyed this information to the High Court.
This SOP was established in response to the recent assault on an army officer and his fiancée that occurred within a police station. A copy of the SOP is to be provided to the High Court and the amicus curiae. The High Court has mandated the installation of CCTVs in all police stations by the specified date. The court was also updated on the status of the ongoing investigation, with the next hearing scheduled for the following Tuesday.
Previously, data regarding the operational status of CCTVs in Odisha’s police stations was submitted. Out of a total of 593 police stations, 456 were found to have non-functional CCTVs. The government has since prioritized making the CCTVs operational in all police stations on an emergency basis.
Additionally, it was noted that 13 police stations in Odisha currently lack any CCTV coverage. The High Court has ordered that CCTVs be installed in these locations within 15 days. The government has indicated that the oversight of all CCTV cameras is managed by the district Superintendent of Police’s office and the Director General’s office.
