Professor Baishnab Charan Samal is set to receive the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2024. His literary work, ‘Bhuti Bhakti Bibhuti,’ has been selected for this esteemed recognition in the Essays category. The Kendriya Sahitya Akademi announced its annual awards today, covering 21 languages. This year, the awards encompass eight poetry collections, three novels, two short stories, three essays, two works of literary criticism, one play, and one research publication. Professor Samal will be presented with an engraved copper plaque, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh during a ceremony scheduled for March 8, 2025, at Kamani Auditorium in New Delhi.
Born on February 27, 1939, in Charigaon, which was part of undivided Cuttack, Samal began his literary journey with the poem ‘Neta Kie.’ He ventured into essay writing and literary criticism around 1964-65, with his first essay, ‘Marutirtha,’ receiving significant acclaim. His works have been featured in numerous literary magazines.
In addition to his writing, Samal pursued a career in academia, commencing his teaching tenure at Fakir Mohan University in 1966 and retiring as a professor from Visva Bharati Central University in 2004. His remarkable contributions to Odia literature have earned him several accolades, including the Odisha Sahitya Akademi Award in 2002, the Bishub Award in 2017, and the Sarala Award in 2014. Furthermore, he has received the Gopinath Nanda Prabhanda and Samalochana Award, as well as the Kshetrabasi Sahitya Vidya Puraskar.
