The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is set to host a national-level ‘Meteorological Olympiad’ for students to celebrate its 150th anniversary. This event will take place in two phases: the state-level competition this month and the national-level event in January. It is open to students in classes VIII, IX, and XI, to promote interest and knowledge in weather and climate sciences among the youth, as stated in an IMD announcement. Students wishing to participate must register by December 10.
As per IMD, the state-level examination will be conducted online on December 14 and 15, consisting of a one-hour test featuring 60 multiple-choice questions related to meteorology and associated fields. The results of this examination will be released on December 17. The national-level competition and workshop are scheduled for January 14 in New Delhi, culminating in the foundation day celebrations on January 15, during which the winners will be honored.
At the state level, prizes of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000, and Rs 2,000 will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners in each class, respectively. At the national level, state winners will vie for prizes of Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000, and Rs 10,000 for the top three positions. Additionally, all participants who complete the Olympiad will receive digital certificates of participation. The announcement also indicated that IMD will cover the travel and accommodation expenses for the top three winners from each state, along with an accompanying teacher or guardian, to attend the workshop and foundation day event in New Delhi.
