Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Manoj Ahuja, is poised for an extended tenure, as the appointments committee of the cabinet has approved a one-year extension of his service, effective from January 1, 2025. Ahuja was originally scheduled to retire on December 31.
This extension comes in anticipation of significant events, including the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which will take place in Bhubaneswar from January 8 to 10, and the Utkarsh Odisha: Make-in-Odisha conclave, scheduled for January 28-29. Both events are pivotal in the BJP government’s agenda for 2025.
Ahuja, an IAS officer from the 1990 batch of the Odisha cadre, assumed the role of chief secretary on June 29, 2024, succeeding Pradeep Kumar Jena on July 1.
Before he was appointed the 46th chief secretary of Odisha, Ahuja was on central deputation and was repatriated to his home cadre at the request of the state government.
Hailing from Haryana, Ahuja is notable for being the first chief secretary from outside Odisha in nearly 39 years, with the previous non-Odia chief secretary being Gian Chand, who served from April 1983 to December 1985.
