The government of Odisha is set to unveil a new agricultural policy that emphasizes organic farming, as announced by Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Friday. During a policy round table held in partnership with the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the CGIAR Initiative, Singh Deo stated that Odisha is ready to take a leading role in implementing inclusive and sustainable agricultural reforms across the nation.
“The discussions and partnerships formed during this event will contribute to a resilient agricultural future where all farmers can prosper. The health of the population is declining due to the overuse of chemical fertilizers in agriculture. It is essential to guide farmers towards organic farming practices. The forthcoming agricultural policy will prioritize organic farming,” he remarked.
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of market linkages for empowering smallholder farmers, indicating that the state government will facilitate the export of farmers’ produce through dedicated cargo flights. “The state government will work to provide farmers with improved access to equitable markets, allowing them to obtain fair prices and enhance their livelihoods through farmer producer organizations,” stated Singh Deo, who also serves as the Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment.
Principal Secretary Dr Arabinda Padhee highlighted that Odisha’s agricultural sector is at the forefront of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. “Our focus will be on expanding these achievements to ensure that every farmer reaps the benefits”.
