In a shocking series of events, a man who was out on bail for the rape of a minor took the opportunity to locate the victim, murder her, dismember her body, and dispose of the remains in various locations throughout the state.
The suspect has been identified as Kunu Kissan. He was arrested in August 2023 for allegedly raping a minor in the Sundargarh district. Following the girl’s report to the Dharuadihi police, Kissan was apprehended, investigated, and subsequently released from custody in December 2023.
According to Parmar Smit Parshottamdas, Superintendent of Police in Jharsuguda, the girl’s family reported her missing on December 7 of this year. The girl, originally from Sundargarh district, had been staying with her aunt in Jharsuguda town.
“We initiated an investigation right away. CCTV footage revealed the girl riding a motorcycle with two individuals whose faces were obscured by helmets,” he explained. He also mentioned that the police utilized artificial intelligence to help track down the suspect. “With the aid of AI technology, we successfully located the accused in Sundargarh. During questioning, he confessed to killing the girl and disposing of her body parts in two separate locations.”
Kissan confessed to the police that he murdered the girl by cutting her throat with a knife on National Highway 143, located between Rourkela and Deogarh. Afterward, he dismembered her body and disposed of the pieces in Tarkera Nali and Balughat along the Brahmani River.
In response, the police, along with the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), initiated a coordinated search operation in the Brahmani River. After several hours of searching, they successfully recovered her body parts, including her head.
The suspect also confessed during questioning that he had been plotting the murder since his release on bail last year, aiming to prevent her from testifying in court, according to the SP. To execute his plan, Kissan altered his motorcycle’s registration number. The police have apprehended Kissan along with one of his associates, and the investigation is ongoing.
