The organization of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) represents a significant challenge for the Mohan Charan Majhi administration, as this marks the first occasion that Odisha is hosting the event. Any missteps could provide the Opposition with an opportunity to critique the government and draw unfavorable comparisons to its predecessor. The 18th PBD is set to commence on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to attend on Thursday.
The state government is making extensive efforts to ensure the event’s success. This occasion presents a valuable opportunity for the Majhi administration to enhance the image of the chief minister, who is currently facing challenges both within his party and in the broader political landscape. Political analyst Girija Shankar Das remarked, “Mohan Majhi will leverage this event to demonstrate his capabilities and address the criticisms directed at him from both inside and outside the party”.
The skyline of Bhubaneswar is adorned with large billboards and cut-outs featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi alongside Chief Minister Majhi, prominently displayed from the Biju Patnaik International Airport to the event venue at Janata Maidan. Additionally, decorative fairy lights are strung from tree branches, and the renowned applique work of Pipili is prominently featured throughout the area.
The government has unexpectedly benefited from the framework established by Naveen Patnaik during the Hockey World Cup and the Make in Odisha Conclave. This initiative has proven to be a significant asset for the Majhi administration. An official remarked, “The government merely needs to ensure the effective implementation of this mechanism.”
In addition to Bhubaneswar, Puri has also been enhanced, with plans underway to host a series of events on the Puri beach to entertain the delegates attending the occasion. Furthermore, other locations such as Konark, Chilika, and various tourist attractions have also undergone renovations. The area surrounding Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar is currently vibrant with activities in anticipation of the festivities.
Upon his arrival before the commencement of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas celebrations, Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar commended the Majhi government for its preparations for the event. Jaishankar stated, “I am confident that the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be celebrated with great grandeur. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has informed me that all arrangements for the three-day event have been finalized. I look forward to the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas being a resounding success in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
For smooth coordination, the state government has opened up help desks at the Bhubaneswar airport. The meeting place has already been decked up and the security arrangements have been tightened. To showcase the rich culture of Odisha, three famous dance festivals kicked off on Tuesday. The Ekamra Utsav also began on Tuesday.
The PBD event will emphasize the accomplishments of the Indian diaspora and its robust ties to India. Exhibitions focusing on the Ramayan, technology, and the diaspora are being organized to illustrate the contributions of the Indian diaspora and its role in promoting Indian culture internationally.
The Ministry of External Affairs engages with the Indian diaspora through thematic events and conferences designed to enhance sectoral expertise on diverse topics, in addition to various welfare initiatives and programs. Distinguished members of the Indian diaspora are recognized with the esteemed Pravasi Bhartiya Samman, the highest accolade awarded to non-resident Indians, during these gatherings.
