Odisha faces challenges in digital education despite the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 highlighting digital literacy as essential. The UDISE+ report for 2023-24 from the Ministry of Education shows that only about 30 percent of teachers in the state are trained to use computers for teaching. In private schools, the percentage of trained teachers is higher. Out of 3.35 lakh teachers in Odisha, 33.3 percent are skilled in computer-based teaching.

Among these trained teachers, 34.7 percent are female and 32.5 percent are male. Many schools lack dedicated computer teachers, and students mainly encounter technology through smart boards in a few institutions, according to the report. Odisha has 61,693 schools, with the government operating 48,671 and 6,042 being private. Only 15,389 schools, or 24.9 percent, have working PCs, and this drops to 16.1 percent for government schools.

In contrast, 67.7 percent of private schools have functional PCs. The situation is concerning regarding smart classrooms and trained teachers using digital tools in government schools. Only 3.9 percent of government schools have PCs connected to teaching devices, and 25.7 percent have functional smart classrooms.

Additionally, 29 percent of government schools use mobile phones for teaching. Interestingly, while many schools lack working computers, the government has provided internet access to about 81.4 percent of its schools, placing Odisha among the top 10 states for internet facilities in government schools.
