The Ministry of Railways has approved several railway infrastructure initiatives in Odisha aimed at enhancing connectivity, reducing transportation expenses, and fostering economic development. Notable projects include the doubling of the Naupada-Gunupur-Theruvali rail line and the establishment of a new 250 km rail line from Gopalpur to Rayagada. To support these endeavors, an allocation of Rs. 90.65 million has been made for the Final Location Survey (FLS).

Furthermore, the ministry has authorized the construction of the Gunupur-Theruvali rail line, which will extend over 73.62 km, with an estimated budget of Rs. 13.26 billion. The state government has committed 473.78 hectares of land for this project, which is anticipated to be completed within five years. This initiative is designed to improve connectivity in the Rayagada district, facilitating more efficient transportation of both goods and passengers.

The Gopalpur-Rayagada and Gunupur-Theruvali rail lines are projected to yield considerable economic advantages by enhancing transportation efficiency and decreasing logistical costs in southern Odisha. These new routes will enable the movement of vital commodities, including agricultural products and minerals, thereby lowering transportation expenses and bolstering supply chain networks. This initiative is in line with national sustainability objectives by advocating for energy-efficient transportation methods.

As part of the Gunupur-Theruvali rail line project, seven new stations will be constructed to enhance accessibility in the region, particularly in the aspirational Rayagada district. This project is a key element of Indian Railways’ energy, mineral, and cement corridors, further integrating both regional and national economies.

The construction phase is expected to create significant employment opportunities, thereby providing a boost to the local economy. By establishing essential infrastructure, these projects will promote industrial growth, enhance trade, and improve transportation efficiency, contributing to the long-term economic development of Odisha.
