Gender equality is not just a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a prosperous and inclusive society. While significant progress has been made over the years, disparities still persist across various sectors, limiting women’s access to more opportunities, leadership roles, and financial independence. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day 2025 with the theme ‘Accelerate Action’, it is imperative to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps toward gender inclusivity.

Breaking Barriers and Creating Equal Opportunities
Women around the world continue to face social, economic, and cultural challenges. Whether it is the workplace, education, healthcare, or entrepreneurship, gender bias remains a critical barrier. Namrata Chadha, a renowned social activist, highlights the essence of true gender equality, stating: “If you talk about gender equality, then it’s not about preaching but about practice. Everybody keeps saying what women should or should not do. Instead of just preaching, it should be implemented in daily life. Success is subjective, and belief in oneself is crucial. Women should have confidence in themselves, not compare or compete with men, but instead focus on self-improvement. Women must believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.”

This perspective underlines the need to shift the narrative from competition with men to self-growth and empowerment. Instead of conforming to societal expectations, women should focus on their own progress and aspirations.

From Words to Action: The Role of Society
True gender equality begins at the grassroots. It requires families, workplaces, and institutions to acknowledge and eliminate biases that hinder women’s progress. Namrata Chadha points out that society will always judge women, but they must rise above societal criticism and believe in themselves.

One of the critical aspects of gender equality is recognition and opportunity. Linkan Subudhi, a child rights activist and bravery awardee, who is also the founder of Seva Prayas Foundation, emphasizes the importance of equal opportunities for women, saying: “We should begin by giving women the same recognition and opportunities that men receive. This change starts with small yet significant steps in our daily lives. Providing women with equal opportunities is essential for a more balanced and inclusive society. Let us all come together to support and encourage women in every field.”

“As this year’s theme is ‘#AccelerateAction’, we must not just talk about empowerment but actively take steps to create real opportunities for women, ensuring equal participation resulting in progress in action mode,” adds Ms Subudhi.

Her words reinforce the urgency of action. Change should not be limited to discussions on women’s rights but should be reflected in everyday decisions; whether it is hiring more women in leadership roles, ensuring equal pay, or creating safe spaces for women to thrive.

A Collective Effort for a Brighter Future
Gender equality is not just a women’s issue; it is a societal issue that requires men, women, and institutions to work together. Every individual must take responsibility for ensuring that gender discrimination is eradicated at all levels.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, let us remember that ‘Accelerate Action’ is not just a theme but a call for transformation. Let us move beyond conversations and take real steps towards a world where women are not just seen and heard but also empowered and respected. Because when women rise, society prospers.
