A recent report reveals that 58% of Odisha’s sitting MLAs face criminal cases, raising concerns about political integrity

An analysis conducted by the Association of Democratic Reforms and National Election Watch indicates that a significant number of sitting MLAs in Odisha are confronting criminal allegations. The report highlights that 85 out of 147 legislators, representing 58% of the assembly’s total membership, have reported criminal cases against themselves. Furthermore, 66 legislators, or 45% of the assembly, are involved in serious criminal offenses.
In terms of severe charges, including rape, murder, and crimes against women, Odisha ranks fourth alongside Jharkhand, where 45% (36 out of 80) of MLAs are similarly facing serious allegations. Seven MLAs—six from the BJP and one from Congress—have disclosed pending murder charges, while 24 legislators are facing attempt-to-murder accusations.
This group includes 17 from the BJP, two each from BJD and Congress, two independents, and one from CPM. Additionally, one MLA has a pending rape case, and 16 others have reported pending cases related to crimes against women in the state.
