Odisha emphasized its maritime growth initiatives at the National Sagarmala Apex Committee Meeting, highlighting its role in advancing port infrastructure and connectivity

Odisha has reiterated its dedication to maritime development during the 4th National Sagarmala Apex Committee (NSAC) Meeting convened in New Delhi. The state boasts a 480 km coastline and is home to Paradip Port, along with several private ports. In the fiscal year 2023-24, Paradip Port achieved a remarkable milestone by handling 145.38 million metric tonnes, marking the highest throughput among major Indian ports.
The meeting presided over by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, focused on maritime infrastructure initiatives under the Sagarmala Programme, the execution of various projects, and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047. A significant emphasis was placed on Sagarmala 2.0, which seeks to improve port modernization, enhance multimodal connectivity, and promote coastal development.
Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary of the Department of Commerce & Transport and CEO of the Odisha Maritime Board, represented Odisha at the meeting. She acknowledged the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways for a decade of advancements and showcased Odisha’s pivotal projects under Sagarmala 2.0.
Odisha highlighted its Odisha State Maritime and Waterways Master Plan (OSMWMP) to enhance connectivity and promote trade. The state also presented its role in maritime heritage through its pavilion at the National Maritime Heritage Complex in Gujarat, along with the proposed India Maritime Centre (IMC) dedicated to research and training.
By strategically concentrating on national waterways, shipbuilding, and sustainable economic development, Odisha seeks to establish itself as a frontrunner in maritime infrastructure, thereby bolstering regional trade and furthering India’s blue economy in alignment with the Sagarmala Programme.
