Modern infrastructure is the need of the hour in order to better equip students of various ITIs and engineering colleges across the state. To address the need, the laboratories at the Orissa School of Mining Engineering (OSME) in the tribal-dominated Keonjhar district are being upgraded with the financial support of the Odisha Mineral Bearing Areas Development Corporation (OMBADC).

Established at the mineral rich Keonjhar district in 1956, OSME provides specialized training in Mining Engineering to local students and youth. Operating under the Skill Development and Technical Education Department, Govt of Odisha; this technical education facility is the first in Eastern India to provide diploma program in Mining Engineering. Currently, the institution offers training programs in eight advanced subjects, including Mining Engineering.

Through OMBADC’s financial assistance, modernization works have been carried out in Mining Engineering, Drill Engineering, Mine Surveying, Metallurgy, and IT laboratories.

Additionally, AutoCAD, MAT laboratories, and a Mining Museum have also been established. Essential equipment like computers and various other machineries have also been provided for the Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering departments.

“Under the Skilled in Odisha program of the state government, various steps are being taken to nurture world class skills among the youth. As part of the initiative, the infrastructure of technical educational institutions like OSME has been strengthened. Due to the support of OMBADC, this educational institution has taken a new shape today. As the skills of the students reach new heights, they are getting jobs in various industrial organizations,” said Er. Krushna Chandra Rout, Principal, OSME.

Moreover, the library at OSME has been renovated, and a variety of textbooks have been made available for students. With the availability of computers and internet access, students can learn about the latest skills and expertise used by leading companies both in India and abroad.

At the national and international level, there is a growing demand for skilled human resources in modern industrial institutions. To meet this need, OSME has been enhancing the skills of its students to a global standard. With the support of OMBADC, various laboratories at the institution have been modernized and new equipment has been provided. Hence, students are now able to benefit from hands-on practice apart from the theoretical knowledge.

Apart from technical knowledge, physical fitness is also important for students. To support the same, OSME has developed a modern gym and an upgraded playground for students to indulge in various outdoor games and sports. Additionally, arrangements for clean drinking water and sanitation have been made for the wellbeing of students.

Thanks to OMBADC’s support, these modern facilities at OSME have led to the creation of a young skilled workforce from the tribal-dominated Keonjhar district. After completing training, students are getting employment opportunities in various mines and industrial organizations.
