The Odisha government has ultimately resolved the uncertainty regarding maternity leave for its female employees. The administration has established clear regulations for granting 180 days of maternity leave, offering relief to female employees.
As per the new directives, a female government employee is entitled to maternity leave of 180 days, which can be taken from three months before the anticipated delivery date and up to six months following the delivery. This leave may be taken continuously or in separate intervals, provided that the childbirth occurs in a recognized medical facility.
The government has also elucidated the regulations for women employees who were not in government employment at the time of childbirth but joined subsequently. In these instances, the female employee is eligible for maternity leave after commencing government service until her child reaches six months of age, although the duration of leave may be shorter than 180 days.
Furthermore, specific provisions have been established for taking leave in situations of abortion, stillbirth, or miscarriage. These guidelines are designed to offer clarity and assistance to female government employees during their maternity period.
The decision has been reached following the approval of the proposal by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, thereby addressing the enduring challenge encountered by women government employees in accessing maternity leave.
The newly established regulations are anticipated to assist female employees and foster a more accommodating workplace environment.
