A remarkable change is taking place in the capital of Odisha as the World Skill Center (WSC), recognized as one of India’s most sophisticated skill development centers, commences its admissions for the 2025–26 academic year. Founded by the Government of Odisha, this center is rapidly becoming a national symbol for youth skill enhancement, attracting aspiring technicians and service professionals from all over the nation.
With the objective of providing India’s youth with skills that are globally relevant and job-ready, WSC delivers innovative training in both engineering and service sectors. Tailored to comply with international competency benchmarks, the center is positioning Odisha as a leader in India’s skill development initiative.
“The World Skill Center serves not merely as a training institution; it acts as a portal to international employment prospects for the youth of Odisha,” stated the Principal of WSC, Shri T Thambyrajah.
WSC functions through two distinct schools—the School of Engineering and the School of Services—both providing carefully designed programs aimed at addressing the changing demands of the global industry.
The School of Services commenced its admissions on March 20, 2025, providing programs such as Beauty and Wellness, which is a rapidly expanding sector both in India and internationally.
The School of Engineering will initiate its admission cycle from June 18 to June 21, offering programs in Mechanical and Electrical Services, Mechatronics, Electrical Technology, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Vertical Transportation (Lift Technology), and Precision Engineering.
The eligibility criteria stipulate a 2-year ITI or a 3-year diploma from any recognized technical or industrial training institute, whether it is privately or government-operated. Programs in the service sector are available to candidates holding a diploma, ITI, or Plus-II qualification in relevant disciplines. WSC sets itself apart with an inclusive admission policy, allocating 10% of its seats for out-of-state candidates. This strategy fosters national integration and provides opportunities for students from all over India to take advantage of Odisha’s innovative initiative.
The infrastructure represents another remarkable aspect. The center features state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced classrooms, and a digitally interactive educational setting. However, the real distinguishing factor is its Finishing School model, which integrates technical training with soft skills, language proficiency, digital literacy, and professional decorum.
“Here, we do not merely impart skills,” stated Asutosh Nayan Dey, Deputy Director of the Academy. “We prepare students for leadership, collaboration, and for challenges they have yet to envision.”
Through strategic partnerships with global industry leaders and certification organizations, WSC guarantees that its training programs meet international standards. Graduates are already obtaining positions in significant global markets, especially in Gulf nations.
One notable success story is Bharat Mundari from Sundargarh, who received training in Electrical Technology and is currently employed with Emrill Services in Dubai. “WSC provided me with an opportunity I never imagined I would have,” he remarked. “I am the first in my family to undertake a technical course beyond ITI.”
Classes for the School of Services are scheduled to commence in early June, while the School of Engineering is anticipated to begin by the end of the month. New cohorts of students are expected to arrive on campus, aspiring to build careers in smart factories, skyscraper maintenance, and global service sectors.
Founded by the Odisha Skill Development Authority, the World Skill Center transcends the role of a mere training facility—it represents a forward-thinking investment in empowering youth and transforming the economy. As international industries increasingly seek skilled talent from India, Odisha’s WSC exemplifies how public policy, infrastructure, and innovation can collaboratively create limitless opportunities.
WSC is not only equipping youth for employment—it is equipping them for global engagement.
