Titilagarh BJP MLA Nabin Kumar Jain has ignited significant controversy by engaging in celebratory gunfire during a Ram Navami procession in the town on Friday.
A video showing Jain firing two rounds into the air from a pistol went viral on Saturday, prompting police to file a case against him under section 125 (acts of rashness or negligence that endanger human life or personal safety) and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act. The police also confiscated the pistol.
Investigations by the police revealed that the firearm was licensed and registered in Jain’s name. A sub-inspector (SI) of police, who was assigned to ensure law and order during the procession, filed a complaint regarding the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that a large procession commenced from Radha Krishna Temple in Titilagarh to celebrate Ram Navami, with numerous devotees and supporters of Jain participating. Children dressed as Lord Ram, Lakshman, Sita, and Hanuman were also included in the festivities.
Amidst the large crowd, Jain allegedly fired into the air at Shastri Chowk. He later discharged another round of blank fire near Old Bank Chowk. In the footage, Jain is seen waving a flag before taking the gun from his personal security officer (PSO) and firing into the air. He then promptly returned the weapon to his PSO.
Despite the considerable outrage generated by the incident, police are also investigating the involvement of the legislator’s PSO.
“A case has been registered, and action is being taken in accordance with the law,” stated Northern Range IG Himanshu Lal. The services of the implicated PSO have also been terminated.
