With Cyclone Dana anticipated to strike Odisha early on Friday, authorities have intensified their precautionary actions, evacuating residents from coastal regions. Puri Beach, a renowned tourist attraction adjacent to the illustrious Jagannath Temple, appeared empty as visitors departed the pilgrimage site in search of safety.

Rajkishore Patra, Secretary of the Puri Hotel Association, expressed concerns regarding the repercussions for the hospitality sector, noting that hoteliers have been compelled to issue refunds for canceled reservations.

“Following the cyclone alert, the influx of new tourists has dwindled and those who had planned week-long visits are attempting to leave. Long lines of tourists can be observed at railway booking counters for return tickets. Overall occupancy has fallen below 20 percent,” Patra remarked.

On Tuesday, lifeguards and volunteers actively cautioned the few tourists still present against entering the sea. The district administration prominently displayed red flags along the beach, signaling the dangers of swimming. Fishermen were also advised to refrain from venturing into the waters.

Puri’s railway station and bus terminal witnessed significant crowds and extensive queues. East Coast Railways has canceled as many as 198 trains that either pass through or originate from Odisha.
