After the Maharashtra election results, there is a palpable sense of unrest within the Congress party, with some of its allies joining the chorus of discontent. The sentiments expressed by party leaders often resemble the voice of a sore loser, lamenting their fate rather than engaging in introspection. “We should push for a return to paper ballots,” asserts party president Mallikarjun Kharge, reflecting a growing frustration that has taken root within the party ranks.
Congress leaders have been quick to attribute their electoral defeat to the electronic voting machines (EVMs), a narrative that has become a familiar refrain in the wake of their losses. This is not the first instance where Congress has pointed fingers at the voting technology; however, the magnitude of their defeat in Maharashtra has intensified their grievances. While it is understandable for the party to feel bewildered and disheartened, especially as the principal opposition party, it is crucial for them to also acknowledge their shortcomings and take responsibility for their electoral failures.
Concrete Evidence
It is essential to recognize that questioning the integrity of the electoral process is a serious matter that carries significant implications. Any allegations regarding the legitimacy of the voting mechanisms must be substantiated with concrete evidence, which, at present, appears to be lacking. The party cannot afford to rely solely on feelings of injustice or a desperate need to find a scapegoat for their losses.
The search for explanations, which has now led Congress down a path of conspiracy theories, began in earnest after the BJP, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, first ascended to power in 2014. The BJP’s continued electoral victories in 2019 and again in 2024, along with their success in various state elections, have only served to deepen Congress’s confusion and frustration.
In the face of these challenges, Congress must engage in a thorough self-assessment rather than deflecting blame onto external factors. The party needs to critically evaluate its strategies, messaging, and connection with the electorate. Acknowledging the changing political landscape and the reasons behind their diminishing support is vital for Congress to regain its footing. Only through honest reflection and a commitment to reform can the party hope to rebuild its credibility and effectively challenge the ruling party in future elections.
Easy Scapegoats
This has even weakened its and its allies’ achievements. Congress recently secured victories in Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh and challenged the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and UP. Although it faced defeat in Maharashtra, its ally JMM helped it regain power in Jharkhand. This tendency to find easy scapegoats and engage in blame politics is becoming increasingly damaging.
It prevents Congress from having a genuine self-assessment. It must consider whether it is providing voters with a reason to support it or if it is merely focused on criticizing the BJP. Is it avoiding important issues due to its shortcomings, or is it lacking conviction and clarity? Additionally, it is important to note that the performance of the Election Commission during the elections has been less than satisfactory.
The ruling party is navigating the complex landscape of political issues with a degree of caution, yet it has been notably slow to acknowledge its missteps and misconduct. This reluctance to confront its shortcomings may undermine its credibility and public trust. In contrast, the Opposition has not held back in its criticism, employing strong and often harsh language to express their discontent.
EC Response
However, the official responses from the Election Commission have taken on a tone that is surprisingly bitter and angry, which is more characteristic of a political party than a neutral constitutional body tasked with overseeing fair elections. This shift in tone raises concerns about the impartiality and integrity of the Commission, as it should ideally maintain a stance that is above the fray of political disputes.
While it is true that the election system in place has its flaws, it has nonetheless proven to be effective in managing the democratic process for a nation as large and diverse as ours. The system has withstood the test of time and has even served as a model for other countries looking to establish or refine their electoral processes. In this context, Sharad Pawar’s call for his party candidates to seek ‘evidence’ regarding alleged conspiracies surrounding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) is a significant development.
This inquiry into potential irregularities is essential, as it is in the best interest of all stakeholders involved to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process. The investigation should be thorough and ongoing, as it is crucial for maintaining public confidence in the electoral system.
Exercising Caution
However, the Congress party needs to exercise caution in how it approaches this situation. The party should refrain from projecting its internal conflicts and struggles onto the broader electoral system, as doing so could further erode public trust and distract from the substantive issues at hand.
Some of Congress’s allies have demonstrated a more thoughtful and measured response to the situation, indicating that there is a path forward that prioritizes constructive dialogue and collaboration rather than divisive rhetoric.
By focusing on unity and a shared commitment to the integrity of the electoral process, the Opposition can better position itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party, ultimately benefiting the democratic fabric of the nation.
