The government of Odisha has unveiled a comprehensive plan amounting to Rs 7000 crore aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in the capital city of Bhubaneswar and enhancing road connectivity. During a review meeting of the Works Department held at Lok Seva Bhawan, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi instructed officials to develop a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed initiatives and to accelerate both the planning and implementation processes.
In the same meeting, CM Majhi assessed the budget utilization, noting that the department has utilized 72% of its allocated funds thus far. He urged officials to ensure full utilization of the budget by the conclusion of the financial year. The discussions encompassed the traffic decongestion strategy alongside integrated development projects for Bhubaneswar.
To tackle the city’s traffic issues, the government has proposed various initiatives, including an elevated corridor from Jaydev Vihar to Nandankanan, the construction of Daya West Canal Road linking Patia Station Square to Suanga Mouza, the widening of Jatni Road from Sundarpada, and the erection of three flyovers at Kalpana Square, Museum, and Sishu Bhawan Square.
Furthermore, an underpass is set to be constructed at AG Square, an area that experiences significant traffic congestion daily. The government also reported ongoing work on the left parallel road extending from the Institute of Mathematics through Patharagadia, Utkal Hospital, Rail Vihar to Ekamra Kanan.
Additionally, plans are in place to build three right access roads connecting Damana Square with Press Square, Kalarahanga with Barimunda, and Kelucharan Park with Barimunda. An inner ring road is also part of the development plan. The stretch from Damana to Press Square has already been completed, while work continues on the Sundarpada-Jatni Road and the Left Parallel Road.
A 64-kilometer inner ring road is set to be developed, featuring six-lane highways extending from Tamando to Paikrapur and from Dhauli to Tamando. Additionally, a proposal for an outer ring road has been formulated to accommodate the city’s growth, comprising a 148-kilometer ring road with six lanes and two service roads. The estimated cost for the city expansion initiative is approximately Rs 6152 crore.
In another significant move towards enhancing infrastructure, the government has also proposed the construction of a Grand Ring Road that will connect all four corners of the state. The first phase will involve the development of a 287-kilometer road linking Berhampur to Jeypore, which will include tunnels along its route.
Furthermore, an allocation of Rs 214 crore has been designated for the renovation and beautification of the Maa Tarini temple in Keonjhar. Discussions have also taken place regarding the development of the Barbil Ring Road, the Unit-2 area of Bhubaneswar, and other related projects. Chief Minister Majhi has instructed that these initiatives commence promptly and be completed within the designated timeframe.
