The esteemed gynecologist and philanthropic figure passed away on Monday at the age of 89 at her residence in Sambalpur, according to sources.

Dr. Panigrahi had been receiving geriatric care for several months due to physical injuries to her hand. However, she reportedly experienced a critical decline last evening due to neurological complications and was receiving treatment at home. Tragically, she succumbed to brain-related ailments later that evening.

Dr. Panigrahi represented the Sambalpur Assembly Constituency in 2014 as a member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), winning by a significant margin.

Before her active political career, Dr. Panigrahi had an illustrious medical career. She earned her MBBS degree from the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) and began her government service in 1972 as a gynecologist.

Initially, she worked as a physician at the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Sundargarh.

Subsequently, Dr. Panigrahi took on the role of a professor at a medical college, continuing her dedication to healthcare until her retirement. Afterward, she joined the BJD following the induction of party leader Naveen Patnaik.

The sudden passing of this remarkable woman from Western Odisha has cast a shadow of sorrow over the community.
