Odisha-born entrepreneur Subroto Bagchi takes charge of Karnataka’s skill development advisory body, drawing on years of experience in skilling, institution building and public leadership

Odisha-born entrepreneur and Mindtree co-founder Subroto Bagchi has been appointed chairman of the Karnataka government’s advisory body on skill development.
The Vision Group for Skill Development has been constituted to provide strategic direction to Karnataka’s skilling ecosystem and help build an industry-relevant workforce across the state.
The group has been set up under the Karnataka State Skill Policy 2025–32, which seeks to create a future-ready workforce aligned with the evolving needs of industries and emerging sectors.
Reacting to his appointment, Bagchi said in a social media post on Sunday that he was honoured to take up the responsibility and expressed his commitment to preparing young people for the future.
“At the behest of Govt of Karnataka, honoured & delighted to be Chairman of the Vision Group on Skill Development. We will build the landing ground for the future to arrive. We have done it before. We will do it again. It is a privilege to be here to serve the Youth of Tomorrow,” he wrote.
Bagchi, who co-founded IT services major Mindtree, has held several leadership roles across the public and private sectors, with a focus on skill development, institution building and leadership.
He previously served as the Chairperson of the Odisha Skill Development Authority (OSDA) for around seven years under the Biju Janata Dal-led government in Odisha. During his tenure, the authority oversaw several of the state’s skill development initiatives.
He also served as Chief Adviser to the Odisha government on institutional capacity building, working with civil services training institutions across the state.
Beyond his work in skill development and institution building, Bagchi and his wife, Susmita Bagchi, have supported several healthcare initiatives in Odisha, particularly in cancer care and palliative care.
The couple pledged ₹210 crore towards the Bagchi-Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Bhubaneswar and ₹130 crore towards the Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre, supporting the expansion of specialised healthcare services in the state.
