Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal on Saturday announced an investment of ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha across aluminium, mining, refining and downstream manufacturing.

Agarwal made the announcement during a meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhavan. Sources said he sought the state government’s support for land allocation to expedite the group’s proposed projects.

The investment plan includes a 30-lakh-tonne-per-annum aluminium smelter in Dhenkanal district and a 60-lakh-tonne-per-annum alumina refinery in Rayagada district.

The Dhenkanal smelter will supply high-quality hot metal to Vedanta’s downstream aluminium parks in Odisha, supporting greater value addition and domestic manufacturing. Once the proposed projects are completed, Vedanta’s cumulative aluminium production capacity in the state is expected to rise to 60 lakh tonnes per annum.

The company has also proposed a brownfield expansion of its existing one-million-tonne-per-annum aluminium smelter at Jharsuguda.

Agarwal said the investments were aimed at creating a world-class industrial ecosystem to support India’s ambitions in infrastructure, energy transition, advanced manufacturing and emerging technologies.

According to Agarwal, the proposed investments are expected to generate more than two lakh direct and indirect employment opportunities in the state.
