As Odisha implements the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), district collectors have been instructed to locate land parcels to support affordable housing for landless families in urban regions.
A senior official from the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department stated that a directive has been issued to the collectors to take prompt action in this matter under the government’s ‘Housing for All’ initiative, which seeks to provide low-cost housing and enhance the quality of life and well-being of the urban poor. This initiative is a priority within the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and plays a crucial role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
He mentioned that under PMAY U 2.0, households with land benefit from the beneficiary-led construction (BLC) vertical, while landless applicants depend on the affordable housing in partnership (AHP) vertical, where public or private entities construct houses with a carpet area of 30-45 square meters, which are subsequently allocated to qualified beneficiaries.
The state government has already received more than 85,000 applications across various verticals of the scheme, including thousands for AHP. “The process has commenced, and some districts have already identified land parcels. However, it may take some time due to the formalities involved in acquiring large tracts of land in urban areas,” the official remarked.
