For the first time in the history of Indian Idol, the winner’s trophy is heading to Odisha.
In a landmark moment for the state’s music fraternity, popular Ollywood playback singer Jyotirmayee Nayak was crowned the winner of Indian Idol Season 16 on Sunday, becoming the first contestant from Odisha to lift the coveted title. Her victory marks not only a personal milestone but also a proud chapter in Odisha’s cultural journey, placing the state’s musical talent firmly on the national stage.
The 24-year-old singer emerged victorious after a gripping grand finale, surpassing fellow finalists Tanishk Shukla, Anshika Chonkar, Manraj Veer Singh and Myscmme Bosu. Along with the glittering trophy, she received a cash prize of ₹20 lakh.
Jyotirmayee’s triumph was the culmination of an extraordinary ten-month journey on one of India’s most watched singing reality shows. Well before Indian Idol, Jyotirmayee had already established herself as a familiar voice in Odisha. She has reportedly recorded nearly 1,000 songs in the Odia music industry, spanning film playback, modern songs, devotional music and stage performances. Her melodious voice has made her one of the most recognisable singers in the state, earning admiration across generations.
Her contribution, however, extends beyond entertainment. Jyotirmayee is also involved in music therapy, using the healing power of music to support cancer patients in coping with anxiety, depression and emotional distress. This compassionate dimension of her work has endeared her to many, reflecting an artist who believes music can heal as much as it can inspire.
