As climate change and rapid urbanisation reshape the built environment, sustainable infrastructure is emerging as a critical priority. Resource-intensive construction practices contribute significantly to energy consumption and carbon emissions, while also placing increasing pressure on natural resources.

The resulting environmental degradation has far-reaching consequences for public health and quality of life, highlighting the need for climate-responsive and resource-efficient development.

Addressing this challenge is Sustainability Leaders Odisha Pvt. Ltd., a women-led startup based in Bhubaneswar that is promoting sustainable development through green building consultancy and environmental planning.

Established in 2016 by architect and environmental planner Sudipta Singh, the startup works with government departments, industries, educational institutions, developers and builders to integrate sustainability into infrastructure projects from the planning stage itself.

Its services include climate-responsive architecture, green building consultancy, Net Zero, Net Plus and carbon-neutral projects, Sustainable Development Plans, environmental planning, green, environmental and energy audits, and ESG, SDG and sustainability reporting. The company also uses advanced energy modelling software to evaluate building performance and quantify energy savings, enabling evidence-based decision-making.

“Green buildings begin at the foundation stage. Sustainability has to be embedded in the design itself through climate-responsive architecture and solar passive principles, from the building’s orientation to its overall form,” says Singh. “Architecture has a significant role to play in creating sustainable, green buildings.”

Starting as a sole proprietorship, the startup has since worked on more than 75 green projects, including Odisha’s first GRIHA Five-Star rated project and the state’s first IGBC Platinum-rated project.

While its primary clients are Odisha government departments and Central government projects being implemented in the state, the startup is expanding its footprint nationally through projects in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Kolkata.

“Odisha remains our principal market and strategic focus as we continue to expand our footprint across the country,” Singh says.

Registered under Startup Odisha and incubated at O-Hub, the startup is part of the innovation ecosystem fostered by the initiative under the MSME Department, Government of Odisha.

Through incubation, mentoring, networking and policy support, it enables entrepreneurs to develop innovative, impact-driven solutions across sectors, including sustainable infrastructure and green innovation.
