A full-length documentary on the iconic Baragada Dhanujatra, one of Odisha’s most distinctive folk and cultural traditions, will have its global digital premiere on the OdishaLIVE YouTube channel on October 3 at 9 PM.
Titled ‘Mamu Gharaku Jatra’, the documentary takes viewers into the fascinating world of the World’s Largest Open-Air Theatre, where, for 11 days, Baragada transforms into the mythical kingdom of Mathura.
Actors and local residents step into the roles of characters from the epic narrative of the Dwapara Yuga. King Kansa reigns from his royal seat as the Prajapalak, while the Jeera River transforms into the Yamuna and the nearby village of Ambapali becomes Gopapur, the setting for Lord Krishna’s childhood. Streets, marketplaces and public spaces turn into an expansive open-air stage, where the timeless triumph of truth over evil unfolds as the central theme.
The documentary goes beyond the spectacle and narrative of the festival to capture the soul of a living tradition, the cultural practices, collective participation and community spirit that have kept Dhanujatra alive across generations.
Alongside the mythology, Mamu Gharaku Jatra brings to the screen the extraordinary involvement of local communities, where everyday life and performance merge and an entire town becomes part of the story.
More than a retelling of Dhanujatra, the documentary presents it as a living cultural tradition, carrying its extraordinary legacy from the streets of Baragada to audiences across the world. Through this production, OdishaLIVE seeks to showcase Odisha’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage and contribute to the diverse cultural tapestry of India.
Now in its 79th year, Dhanujatra has evolved into a defining cultural identity of Odisha, drawing its strength from the deep-rooted participation of the community that continues to keep the tradition alive.
‘Mamu Gharaku Jatra’ is directed and edited by Suresh Pattnaik and produced by Nilambar Rath, with Pranati Parida as co-producer. The documentary is supported by MCL, with aml Communications as the communications partner.
