In the quiet coastal town of Berhampur, Odisha, a young Pradeep Mahapatra dreamed of telling stories. Little did he know that his passion would one day shape the landscape of journalism in his home state and beyond.
Dr. Pradeep’s journey began in 1970 when, as a high school student, he penned his first article for ‘Sambit’ magazine. This small step ignited a flame that would burn brightly for over five decades, illuminating the path for countless aspiring journalists.
With an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he ventured to Bangalore University, where he earned his postgraduate degree in English Journalism in 1981. Armed with this education and an unwavering determination, he returned to his beloved Berhampur to begin his professional journey.
Although he held a postgraduate degree in English Journalism, he obtained his Ph.D. in Odia Journalism in 1998. He earned his doctorate with a thesis titled “Role of ‘Utkal Dipika’ in Development of Odia Journalism”.
Dr. Pradeep Mahapatra’s versatility knew no bounds. From newspapers to magazines, radio to television, and even cinema, he left his mark on every medium he touched. But it was his work in development communication that truly set him apart. He became a voice for rural upliftment and cultural activism, using his pen to bring about positive change.
He was the founder of ‘Janani’, the first color magazine in Odia, which became very popular in the 90s. He was also associated with the daily newspaper ‘Asha’ published from Berhampur. His writing regularly appeared in the Deccan Herald. He maintained regular columns in various newspapers, with ‘Berhampur Diary’ being one of his most popular columns.
Dr. Mahapatra played a key role in several publications. He oversaw “Gram Vikas Samachar,” a development-focused Odia journal, published by ‘Gram Vikas’ for 12 years (1998-2011) and “Brahmapur Poura Samachar,” a house journal, for 2 years (1993-95). He also managed the publication of “PREM-PLAN Swasthy Suchana” (4 volumes, 2007-09), “Odisha Adivasi Samachar” (6 issues, 2004-05), and “Khabara,” a children’s wall newspaper (1998-2000). These efforts showcase his dedication to community journalism and social issues.
But perhaps, Dr. Pradeep’s greatest contribution came when he transitioned from a journalist to an educator. For 27 years, he shaped young minds as a professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Berhampur University, eventually heading the department. His students remember him as a simple, approachable mentor who nurtured their talents and ambitions.
Even after retirement in 2014, his passion for journalism remained undiminished. He continued to write, offering insightful commentary on national and international issues. As the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, his analytical mind dissected the changing media landscape, providing valuable perspectives to his readers.
On a somber Friday, 2nd August, 2024, the news of Dr. Pradeep Mahapatra’s passing sent shockwaves through the journalism community. The corridors of Berhampur University fell silent, and newsrooms across Odisha paused in remembrance. But in this moment of grief, we celebrate a life lived in pursuit of truth and knowledge.
As we bid farewell to this stalwart of journalism, we are reminded that the power of the written word transcends mortality. He may no longer be with us, but his stories, his teaching, and his unwavering dedication to journalism will continue to inspire generations to come.
