The government of Odisha, led by the BJP, is set to introduce a new initiative aimed at the preservation and renovation of notable temples and mathas throughout the state, along with providing financial support for their daily operations. This forthcoming initiative, which is expected to be titled ‘Debalaya’ (meaning temple), is still in the process of finalizing its guidelines.
On Monday in Bhubaneswar, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan announced the impending launch of the ‘Debalaya’ Yojana, designed to safeguard temples and mathas across Odisha. This initiative will tackle the various operational difficulties encountered by religious institutions, offering a holistic approach that extends beyond mere maintenance.
“The yojana will facilitate the preservation of temples and mathas while addressing the specific challenges these institutions face throughout the state,” stated Harichandan. This initiative builds upon the earlier Augmentation of Basic Amenities & Development of Heritage and Architecture (ABADHA) scheme, which primarily concentrated on the repair of temples.
In contrast, the Debalaya Yojana will encompass a wider array of requirements, including restoration, repair and comprehensive management. Harichandan noted that a detailed plan is currently being developed, underscoring the government’s dedication to safeguarding Odisha’s rich cultural heritage through targeted efforts.
