Six individuals lost their lives and one worker suffered critical injuries while working inside a septic tank that was under construction in the Kalahandi district of Odisha. The fatalities that occurred during a rescue operation have prompted a police investigation into potential safety violations.

A heartbreaking event unfolded in Goud Karlakhunta village, located in the Madanpur-Rampur area of the district, on Tuesday, where six workers succumbed to suffocation while engaged in work within the septic tank. Another worker is in critical condition and is receiving medical care at a hospital.

Preliminary reports indicate that a new septic tank was being built adjacent to a residence in the village. Several workers entered the tank to extract centering materials when they suddenly encountered breathing difficulties in the confined space.

According to sources, some workers who initially entered the tank lost consciousness after reportedly inhaling toxic gases. In their attempt to rescue them, additional workers entered the tank one after another, only to collapse themselves due to the poisonous fumes and insufficient oxygen. What began as a rescue operation quickly escalated into a significant tragedy.

The deceased are reported to include three masons, one laborer, the homeowner, and his son.

Upon receiving information regarding the incident, local residents and administrative officials hurried to the scene.

After an extensive rescue operation, all victims were extracted from the tank and transported to the Madanpur-Rampur Community Health Centre, where medical personnel pronounced six individuals dead.

One additional injured worker remains in critical condition and is currently receiving treatment.

The incident has created a somber atmosphere in the area, with villagers profoundly shocked by the loss of life. Authorities suspect that toxic gas within the septic tank was the main cause of the tragedy.

Upon notification, police from the Madanpur-Rampur police station arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Officials are examining whether there was any negligence in adhering to safety protocols while performing work in the confined space.

Expressing profound sorrow over the fatalities, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of the deceased.
