Bhubaneswar-based space-tech startup Serendipity Space successfully tested microgravity pharmaceutical manufacturing in near-space

Serendipity Space, a Bhubaneswar-based space-tech startup co-founded by Antariksh Parichha, Jivitesh Debata and Dr Monica Ekal, has successfully recovered an orbital-class satellite prototype after a March 2026 near-space mission. The mission represents a significant step towards manufacturing pharmaceuticals in microgravity.

The mission tested the company’s key technologies, including an advanced heat shield, avionics, and “Alchemy”, its autonomous pharmaceutical manufacturing system. Alchemy operated in space, carried out drug crystallization, and preserved the resulting pharmaceutical crystals through re-entry, touchdown and recovery. The payload included monoclonal antibody therapeutics, small-molecule drugs, and proteins for drug discovery research.

The company’s central idea is that microgravity can improve pharmaceutical crystallization. On Earth, gravity can contribute to structural defects in drug crystals, affecting properties such as solubility, stability and bioavailability. Microgravity may allow more uniform crystals to form, potentially improving both small-molecule medicines and protein-based therapies. This is the first-ever experiment done in India.

Serendipity Space was formed by combining expertise in physics, engineering, pharmaceutical science and space operations. After raising pre-seed funding in July 2025, it assembled its technical team by October, built a functional satellite prototype in less than four months, conducted a month-long testing programme and launched the near-space demonstration in March 2026.

For co-founder and CEO Antariksh Parichha, the project has a personal connection: an experience with cancer led him to study immunotherapies such as Keytruda and the limitations of conventional pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Serendipity Space plans to move from near-space demonstrations to full-orbit pharmaceutical manufacturing and the return of medicines to Earth. The successful recovery of its prototype provides the technological foundation for this next phase and potentially positions microgravity manufacturing as a new frontier in drug development and delivery.
