Odisha’s efforts in restoring mangroves were showcased in a documentary series, presented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador and actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is widely recognized for his portrayal of Jaime Lannister in the television series Game of Thrones, highlighting the significance of community-driven initiatives.

The narrative of mangrove restoration is included in the second season of the Bloomberg Originals series An Optimist’s Guide to the Planet, which is hosted by Coster-Waldau.

This season, which debuted on Wednesday, features a segment dedicated to Odisha’s mangrove restoration efforts as part of the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities initiative (ECRICC). This initiative is a collaborative project involving the Green Climate Fund, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and the Department of Forest, Environment and Climate Change, with support from the UNDP.

The inaugural episode, titled ‘Protect’, follows Coster-Waldau to Bagapatia village in the Kendrapara district, where communities affected by rising sea levels and coastal erosion are reconstructing their lives through climate-resilient methods. It illustrates how local men and women are engaged in restoring mangroves and protecting their coastline as part of the ECRICC initiative.
