Representatives from 11 countries will participate in the second technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Working Group, which will be hosted by Odisha in Puri from June 3 to 5.

Announcing the event on Monday, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said Odisha was selected as the host state in recognition of its globally acclaimed achievements in disaster preparedness, cyclone management, and early warning systems.

Delegates from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia are expected to attend the meeting. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will inaugurate the event on June 4.

Pujari noted that India had earlier chaired the first technical meeting of the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group, which was held virtually on April 29 and 30. The upcoming gathering in Puri will be the first in-person technical meeting of the working group under India’s BRICS Presidency in 2026.

The meeting will bring together delegates, policymakers, and disaster management experts from BRICS member and partner nations to deliberate on key issues related to disaster resilience and risk reduction.

According to the Minister, discussions will focus on sustainable financing for disaster risk reduction, development of resilient infrastructure, anticipatory response mechanisms, and the integration of traditional knowledge into disaster resilience strategies.

The event is expected to strengthen cooperation among BRICS countries and promote the exchange of best practices in disaster management and climate resilience.
