Baladev Maharatha, one of the brightest stars in Odisha’s artistic firmament, is a distinguished painter whose creative brilliance has illuminated the world of Indian art. He represents a remarkable synthesis of Indian tradition, spiritual consciousness, and contemporary artistic vision. Born on May 7, 1956, in Khordha, Odisha, this eminent artist and art educator has, for several decades, enriched Odisha’s cultural landscape through his unwavering dedication to artistic practice, creative innovation, and art education. As the Head of the Department of Indian Style Painting at B.K. College of Art & Crafts, Bhubaneswar, he has not merely served as a teacher but has inspired and guided generations of young artists in their creative journeys.
Raised amidst the simplicity of rural life and the intimate companionship of nature, Maharatha’s childhood nurtured his artistic sensibilities. His mother was his first art teacher. It was her affectionate guidance that planted the seeds of visual creativity in his heart, which eventually grew into a magnificent tree of artistic excellence.
After completing his formal education in painting at Khallikote Art College, he earned a Master’s degree in History from Utkal University. Later, under the mentorship of Professor Sukhamay Mitra at Visva-Bharati University, he received specialized training in fresco painting. This experience greatly enriched his artistic language, making it more refined, graceful, vibrant, profound, and diverse.
Baladev Maharatha’s paintings remain deeply rooted in the essence of Indian culture. His vibrant colour sensibility, lyrical line work, distinctive style, and compositional language beautifully express spiritual thought, mythological symbolism, the simple beauty of rural life, and the philosophical depth of Indian civilization.
His celebrated series inspired by the rural life of Odisha, Kalidasa’s Ritusamhara, the Devadasi tradition, the various manifestations of Goddess Durga, and the 108 forms of Lord Ganesha stand as remarkable contributions to the treasure of Indian art.
His works have been widely acclaimed in exhibitions across India and abroad. Solo exhibitions of his paintings have been held at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, the exhibition halls of the National Lalit Kala Akademi, and the Odisha Modern Art Gallery. His regular participation in national art exhibitions has firmly established his reputation on the Indian art scene.
In a unique artistic collaboration with the world-renowned flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Maharatha presented an extraordinary fusion of visual art and classical music, demonstrating that true art transcends all boundaries to create a unified aesthetic experience.
In recognition of his exceptional artistic achievements, he received the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1989. He has also been honoured with the prestigious Ka Sanskriti Samman and the distinguished Ila-Bansidhar Panda Art Award, further acknowledging his lifelong dedication to art.
Baladev Maharatha is not merely a painter; he is an artist-saint, a thinker, and a devoted interpreter of India’s artistic heritage.

After retiring as the Principal of Bibhuti Kanungo College of Art & Crafts, Bhubaneswar, he has devoted himself entirely to artistic practice and creative contemplation.
