The government of Odisha has commenced extensive preparations to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in January. This prominent annual event, which honors the contributions of the Indian diaspora to the nation’s development, is scheduled to take place at Janata Maidan from January 8 to 10.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the event, providing a platform for engagement and connection with overseas Indians, while also facilitating collaboration in the process of nation-building. President Droupadi Murmu, a native of Odisha, is anticipated to attend the event on its final day.

With over 5,000 delegates expected to arrive in Odisha during this time, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has requested the state government to ensure the availability of at least 4,500 hotel rooms.

An exclusive accommodation platform is set to be launched shortly, aimed at providing Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with advanced access to a comprehensive list of hotels, homestays and guest houses. This platform will be seamlessly integrated with the registration portal of the Union government. Additionally, the Tourism department is developing a website that will feature information on accommodations, tourist attractions and other points of interest.

A tourist advisory, along with details of ongoing events, will be made available, complemented by a 24/7 helpline to assist visitors. An exhibition showcasing Odisha’s rich history, including the birthplace of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, the art and craft village of Raghurajpur and other significant sites, is being organized as part of the event. Locations such as Mangalajodi will be highlighted as appealing tourist destinations, particularly known for their migratory bird populations.

Furthermore, the state government has been requested to collaborate with airlines to enhance flight availability during the event and to effectively explore homestay options, drawing inspiration from Madhya Pradesh to bolster tourism. The previous Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

A minimum of three exhibitions have been scheduled, including the Ramayan, the contributions of Non-Resident Indians in technology, and the Odisha Pavilion. The Prime Minister is expected to inaugurate the Pravasi Bharatiya Teerth Express in conjunction with this occasion. Additionally, a ride-hailing service named Odisha Yatri will be introduced shortly to assist overseas Indians and other distinguished guests in exploring various attractions in Odisha during the event.
