The government of Odisha has announced the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across all state-run universities and affiliated colleges starting from the current academic year, according to an official statement. This decision, made by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to introduce significant reforms within the state’s educational framework.

Under the NEP, a new four-year undergraduate program will be introduced, replacing the traditional three-year courses. Students will have the opportunity to earn a certificate, diploma, degree, and honors degree upon the completion of each year within this four-year structure.

The state government has established a credit framework aligned with the guidelines provided by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This framework allows students to engage in skill development, internships, community service and extracurricular activities, including participation in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS), to accumulate credits.

This initiative will empower students to select their subjects independently and complete their degree programs within a span of seven years, with the flexibility of multiple entries and exits from their respective institutions. Additionally, the government is taking measures to enhance the quality, autonomy and inclusivity of the higher education system by the NEP 2020.

The National Education Policy (NEP) aims to enhance research and innovation by implementing a range of initiatives, emphasizing practical learning and skill acquisition through industry internships. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the courses will be tailored to be more aligned with employment opportunities and meet the demands of the industry.

The government has sanctioned the introduction of two skill development programs, 112 interdisciplinary courses, 14 vocational training courses, 56 value-added courses and 84 skill enhancement courses, along with a comprehensive model syllabus for 40 fundamental undergraduate degree programs, as stated.
