On Tuesday, Suresh Pujari, the Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, underscored the critical role of a robust early warning system as a fundamental element of effective disaster management.
During a consultation event organized by the United Nations India in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation, the Minister reaffirmed Odisha’s dedication to enhancing its disaster response capabilities.
“By refining the early warning system, the government will find it considerably easier to mitigate the effects and manage natural disasters,” Pujari remarked. He recognized Odisha’s status as a national frontrunner in disaster management and emphasized the necessity of a collaborative approach that includes various stakeholders to tackle future challenges.
Referring to the recent Severe Cyclonic Storm Dana that affected Odisha in October, Pujari noted that the state government had shared its insights and exchanged ideas with other attendees at the event. “Odisha’s approach to managing natural disasters has set a benchmark for the entire nation, and we are committed to learning and evolving from our past experiences,” he stated.
The consultation, held in Bhubaneswar, featured the participation of Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator for India and Jagannatha Kumar, CEO of Reliance Foundation.
Participants engaged in discussions regarding strategies to enhance early warning systems and reflected on lessons learned from previous disaster management initiatives.
