In a rare distinction, Sk Shehan Hossain, a researcher from Odisha, has been elected as an Associate Member of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, an international organisation that recognises excellence and potential in scientific research.
Hossain was elected to the society in 2026 as an Associate Member, as confirmed by the Society’s Committee on Qualifications and Membership.
Sigma Xi describes itself as the world’s largest general research honor society and an international, multidisciplinary body representing research scientists and engineers. It was founded at Cornell University in New York by a faculty member and graduate students in 1886 and is one of the oldest honor societies.
Membership in the prestigious organization is granted strictly by nomination. While full membership requires noteworthy research achievements—such as primary authorship of multiple peer-reviewed papers or patents—associate membership is extended to select individuals demonstrating exceptional research promise.
The society evaluates nominees on the basis of their research contributions, career preparation, quality of work, and overall potential.
The organisation states that more than 200 of its members have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize, while many others have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering.
Sigma Xi’s membership criteria specify that nominations are based on an individual’s engagement in scientific research and the quality and impact of their work. The society notes that membership is not dependent on holding a particular academic degree or belonging to any other professional organisation.
The recognition adds to Odisha’s growing presence in the global research community, highlighting the contributions of researchers from the state on international scientific platforms.
