Odisha experienced a notable rise in foreign tourist arrivals (FTA) in 2024, reaching a total of 53,392, which represents an 18% increase from the 45,173 recorded in 2023, as per data from the state tourism department. Sources within the department indicated that the influx of domestic tourists also rose by 13%, increasing from 9,725,184 in 2023 to 10,998,819 in 2024. Despite this positive trend, the current figures still fall short of the pre-pandemic levels of 115,128 foreign tourist arrivals in 2019, suggesting a gradual recovery within the tourism sector.

Tourists from the US and Japan continue to play a significant role in bolstering the state’s tourism economy. The increase in foreign visitors is viewed as an encouraging sign for the state, which has been working diligently to restore its position in the global tourism market following the pandemic. “We are implementing various strategies to attract more foreign tourists to Odisha. Our initiatives to promote Odisha as a safe and appealing destination are yielding positive results. We are dedicated to enhancing the tourist experience by upgrading infrastructure, amenities, and providing unique cultural experiences,” stated tourism secretary Balwant Singh. The department has been actively showcasing its rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and diverse wildlife to entice international visitors.

Initiatives such as the establishment of eco-tourism projects, heritage walks, and cultural festivals have played a crucial role in attracting tourists back to the state. “The rise in foreign tourists is promising. We are observing an increased interest in our cultural tours and eco-friendly travel packages. There is a heightened appreciation for Odisha’s distinctive offerings,” stated Debasis Kumar, a member of the executive committee of the Hotel and Restaurant Association of Odisha (HRAO).

Nevertheless, challenges persist as the state strives to reach and even exceed pre-pandemic tourist levels. Industry experts highlighted the necessity for ongoing investment in infrastructure, marketing, and safety measures to maintain growth and draw more international visitors.

“We are optimistic that with our continuous efforts, dynamic marketing through roadshows and social media promotion, and infrastructure development, we will soon exceed our pre-pandemic figures,” remarked a tourism official.
