C. V. Raman Global University (CGU), Bhubaneswar, is set to launch its first satellite, CGUSAT-1, becoming the first university in the eastern region of the country to undertake a satellite mission. The satellite will be launched using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-62 of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
The initiative is the outcome of preparatory work that began four years ago with the establishment of a Government of India–licensed satellite ground station (Call Sign: VU2CGU) under the university’s Department of Space Systems Engineering. As part of early planning and exposure, faculty members visited academic and research institutions in Israel to study international practices in student-led satellite development.

Subsequently, a group of faculty members and students received specialised training in satellite design, assembly, and testing at Hyderabad. The satellite has since undergone the required technical evaluations and inspections and has been cleared for launch by ISRO.
According to university officials, the satellite programme aims to provide students with practical exposure in areas such as satellite operations, communication systems, and image processing. Students involved in the project are also expected to work on data analysis and explore applications in the space and geospatial sectors.
The university has indicated that plans are underway for the development of additional satellites using advanced technologies, with training programmes currently in progress.
The launch of CGUSAT-1 reflects the growing participation of academic institutions in India’s expanding space ecosystem and the increasing focus on skill development and applied research in space science and engineering.
