Prof. Siba Prasad Misra (1934-2026) was a distinguished theoretical physicist from Odisha widely respected for his contributions to quantum field theory and particle physics and for his formative role in nurturing advanced physics research in the state. He belonged to a generation of Indian scientists who came of age in the decades following Independence, when the country was consciously investing in the creation of scientific institutions and indigenous research traditions.
Odisha, too, was witnessing the gradual strengthening of higher education in the sciences, and Prof. Misra emerged as one of the key figures in this intellectual transformation.
He received his higher education at Utkal University, where he completed both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in theoretical physics. His academic training during this formative period equipped him with a strong grounding in modern theoretical methods at a time when opportunities and resources were still limited, making his achievements particularly significant. Early in his career, he demonstrated a deep engagement with the conceptual foundations of high-energy physics, an area that would remain central to his scholarly interests.
In 1975, Prof. Misra joined the Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar, as Professor, beginning a long and influential association with the institution that lasted nearly two decades. During his tenure from 1975 to 1994, he played an important role in consolidating theoretical physics research at IOP, helping to shape its academic culture and research priorities. He continued to serve the institute as Emeritus Professor until 1996 and also took on the responsibility of Officiating Director for a brief period, contributing to its administrative and academic leadership during a crucial phase of growth. He continued his research on hadrons as bound states within the QCD vacuum.
As a teacher and mentor, Prof. Misra was known for his clarity of thought, intellectual rigor, and commitment to nurturing young talent. He guided and inspired several generations of students and researchers, many of whom went on to pursue successful careers in academia and research institutions across India and abroad. His influence thus extended well beyond his own publications, leaving a lasting imprint on the broader scientific community.
After retiring from active teaching, Prof. Misra remained deeply involved in the promotion of science in Odisha. He served as President of the Orissa Bigyan Academy, where he worked to strengthen scientific awareness, research culture, and dialogue between scientists and the wider public. His leadership reflected his belief that the advancement of science was essential not only for academic progress but also for the social and intellectual development of the region.
In recognition of his sustained contributions to physics education and research, the Orissa Physical Society felicitated Prof. Misra at its 16th annual convention in 1998. His life and work stand as an important part of Odisha’s scientific legacy, symbolizing the growth of theoretical physics and the emergence of strong research institutions in the state during the post-independence period.
