Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Thursday initiated the ₹952 Crore Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan Elevated Corridor project, marking a major milestone in the most ambitious urban mobility projects in Odisha. The project laying marks the completion of the BJP’s two year rule in Odisha.

The transformative infrastructure project aims to permanently address the chronic traffic congestion along one of Bhubaneswar’s busiest and fastest-growing corridors while strengthening connectivity between the Capital and its Twin City, Cuttack.

Stretching 9.5 kilometres from Kalinga Stadium Gate–4 to Raghunathpur Bridge, the corridor will create a dedicated, high-capacity urban transport spine that is expected to provide seamless connectivity between the city centre and the rapidly expanding northern parts of Bhubaneswar. It is poised to benefit lakhs of commuters every day, including students, office-goers, tourists, healthcare workers, emergency services, public transport users, businesses and residents of the Smart City.

One of the most significant features of the project is the planned deployment of advanced traffic management systems aimed at reducing dependence on conventional traffic signals. Once completed, the corridor will offer a largely signal-free travel experience through a network of flyovers, parallel road networks, roundabouts, and slip roads.

A landmark feature of the project will be a four-lane cable-stayed bridge at Jaydev Vihar Junction on top of NH-16, along with flyovers at key intersections including Kalinga Hospital Square, Damana Square, KIIT Square and Kalarahanga Junction. The existing six-lane road will also be widened to eight lanes, significantly enhancing road capacity and traffic flow.

Inspired by Chandigarh’s road planning model, the corridor will separate long-distance traffic from local traffic through dedicated service roads running parallel to the main carriageway. This will allow vehicles travelling across the city to move uninterrupted while ensuring smooth access to educational institutions, nearby residential areas, hospitals and commercial establishments.

The elevated corridor will reduce travel times, lower transportation costs, improve logistics efficiency and enhance connectivity to Bhubaneswar’s IT hub and surrounding business districts, reducing travel time for professionals and supporting economic activity in one of the Capital’s fastest-growing urban zones.

Aligned with the Bhubaneswar Comprehensive Development Plan–2040 vision, the project marks a significant step towards creating a modern, efficient and future-ready transportation network. For countless daily commuters, it promises not just shorter journeys but a fundamental improvement in the quality of urban life.
