Odisha came together on Friday to remember and celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of eminent writer, playwright, scholar, and cultural visionary Jagannath Prasad Das at a memorial meeting organized by Ketaki Foundation Trust in collaboration with Utsha Foundation at Bhubaneswar.
The gathering witnessed the presence of distinguished literary figures, artists, academicians, cultural practitioners, admirers, and members of the public who assembled to pay homage to one of Odisha’s most revered intellectuals. The event served not only as a remembrance of a remarkable individual but also as a reflection on his enduring contributions to Odia literature, art, and cultural thought.
Speakers at the memorial recalled Jagannath Prasad Das as a multifaceted genius whose creative brilliance transcended genres, disciplines and boundaries. Widely regarded as one of the most influential literary voices of modern Odisha, he enriched Odia literature through his poetry, fiction, drama, and scholarly writings. His works explored the complexities of human existence, history, spirituality, and social transformation, earning him admiration from readers and critics alike. Some of his works include acclaimed historical novel ‘Desha Kala Patra’ and plays from ‘Suryasta Purbaru’ to ‘Sundara Das’.
Born in Puri district, Jagannath Prasad Das initially dedicated himself to public service holding several crucial positions in both the state and central governments. After an early retirement, he devoted himself to his passion in literature, art, and creative pursuits. He became a pioneering literary face whose intellectual curiosity and artistic sensibility shaped contemporary Odia literature for decades. His celebrated literary achievements went beyond the boundaries as he helped introduce Odia literature and culture to global audience. He translated works from languages such as Swedish, Urdu, French, and English to Odia.
Beyond writing, he played a pivotal role in promoting cultural dialogue, preserving heritage, and encouraging artistic innovation through his important books like Puri Paintings (1982) and Palm-Leaf Miniatures (1991). His contributions extended to theatre, visual arts, and cultural institutions, where his vision helped nurture generations of creative minds.
Throughout his distinguished career, Das received numerous accolades and honours for his exceptional contributions to literature and culture. Yet, those who knew him remembered him equally for his humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to knowledge and creativity. Reflecting his commitment for enrichment of scientific spirit, his body has been voluntarily donated for medical research at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. His to bridge tradition and modernity made his work timeless and universally relevant.
