The Rameshwar–Paradip Coastal Highway will boost Odisha’s tourism, logistics, ports, connectivity, and coastal economy through a ₹8,300 crore infrastructure project

The proposed Rameshwar–Paradip Coastal Highway, stretching over 160 kilometres, is poised to become one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in Odisha’s recent history. Designed to redefine connectivity along the state’s coastline, the corridor is expected to strengthen transport, stimulate economic growth, and unlock the immense tourism potential of the coastal region. Being developed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at an estimated capital cost of more than ₹8,300 crore, the highway represents a major investment in Odisha’s long-term development strategy.
The corridor will traverse the districts of Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur, linking some of Odisha’s most significant cultural, religious, ecological, and industrial destinations. It will improve access to iconic pilgrimage centres, pristine beaches, coastal villages, ports, and emerging industrial hubs, creating a continuous transport spine along the Bay of Bengal. By reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion on existing routes, and providing safer and faster road connectivity, the highway is expected to significantly improve the movement of people and goods.
Beyond transportation, the project has the potential to reshape the economic landscape of the coastal belt. Improved accessibility is likely to attract new investments in hospitality, tourism, logistics, and small-scale industries. Local entrepreneurs are expected to benefit from increased visitor traffic, creating opportunities for hotels, homestays, restaurants, cafés, handicraft outlets, seafood markets, and other tourism-related enterprises. Traditional artisans, fishermen, self-help groups, and rural producers will gain easier access to larger markets, enabling them to expand their businesses and enhance household incomes. The project is also expected to generate substantial employment during both the construction and operational phases.
The highway aligns closely with Odisha’s broader vision of developing a vibrant blue economy by integrating tourism, maritime trade, fisheries, and coastal infrastructure. It will improve access to ports and industrial zones while enhancing disaster response capabilities in a cyclone-prone region by facilitating faster evacuation and emergency services. Better road infrastructure will also strengthen connectivity between urban centres and remote coastal communities, improving access to education, healthcare, and essential public services.
An important feature of the project is its integration with the state’s wider economic network. The highway will connect nine economic nodes and five logistics nodes, creating an efficient corridor for freight movement and industrial development. By linking production centres with ports, markets, warehouses, and transport hubs, it will reduce logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and enhance Odisha’s competitiveness as a destination for manufacturing and exports.
As Odisha prepares for its Vision 2036 and Vision 2047 development goals, the Rameshwar–Paradip Coastal Highway is expected to serve as more than just a road. It will function as a strategic economic corridor that connects heritage with industry, tourism with commerce, and local communities with new opportunities for sustainable growth. Its successful implementation has the potential to transform the state’s coastline into a dynamic zone of prosperity, resilience, and inclusive development.
