The “Divine Puri” conclave, an initiative by the Odisha-based digital news platform Newsroom, brought together key stakeholders to explore and strategize the enhancement of Odisha’s economy by leveraging the immense potential of Puri, the land of Lord Jagannath, as one of India’s foremost centers for spiritual tourism.

The event, held in Bhubaneswar on July 16, 2025, and was steered by Manoranjan Mishra, Founder Editor, and Priyadarsi Bal, Founder & CEO of Newsroom, with OdishaLIVE as the communication partner.

The conclave served as a platform to present actionable recommendations derived from a comprehensive survey, “Understanding Tourist, Local People & Service Providers’ Experience in Puri Rath Yatra-2025.” This pivotal research was conducted by the Centre for Marketing in Emerging Economies (CMEE), IIM Lucknow, in collaboration with Newsroom.

Presenting the groundbreaking findings, Prof. Satyabhusan Dash of IIM Lucknow highlighted the profound spiritual and psychological impact of the Rath Yatra on its visitors.

The survey revealed that the primary motivation for an overwhelming 76.5% of attendees is to seek the “Blessings of Lord Jagannath.” Other significant motivators included finding “mental peace” (14.3%) and “leisure activity” (8.3%), underscoring the deep spiritual connection visitors feel with the event.

Perhaps the most striking revelation from the study was the quantifiable increase in happiness and life satisfaction among the attendees. Using a “happiness ladder” where participants rated their well-being on a scale of 0 to 10, the study found a good surge in happiness. The average happiness score of visitors jumped from 6.87 before attending the Rath Yatra to an impressive 9.10 during or after the experience.

This statistically significant increase of 2.23 points provides concrete evidence of the festival’s transformative power. This data strongly suggests that the Rath Yatra is not just a religious gathering but a deeply impactful event that significantly enhances personal well-being.

The conclave emphasized that this immense spiritual capital holds the key to unlocking significant economic opportunities for Odisha.

The discussions, led by policymakers and industry experts, revolved around creating a sustainable tourism model that respects the sanctity of Puri while developing world-class infrastructure and services. The actionable recommendations presented focused on enhancing the overall visitor experience, from accommodation and transport to sanitation and information access, ensuring that the spiritual journey is complemented by comfort and convenience.

In his address, Manoranjan Mishra stated, “The ‘Divine Puri’ initiative is a journey from spiritualism to a thriving economy. Our goal is to create a roadmap that honors our rich heritage while building a prosperous future for the people of Odisha.”

The event concluded with a consensus on the need for a collaborative approach, bringing together the government, private sector, academic institutions, and local communities to realize the vision of establishing Puri as a global beacon of spiritual tourism.

The data-driven insights from such surveys may serve as foundational guide for policy-making, ensuring that the development of Puri is both sustainable and deeply rooted in its unique cultural and spiritual identity.

The second panel, moderated by Manoranjan Mishra, featured a dynamic discussion on Odisha’s development with Manmohan Samal (President, BJP Odisha), Bhakta Das (President, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee), and Debi Prasad Mishra (Vice-President, BJD).
