Prepare your raincoats and umbrellas for this Durga Puja, as the rains are expected to overshadow the Dussehra celebrations with consecutive weather systems anticipated over the weekend. Meteorologists have indicated that Durga Puja is likely to commence with rain, and the precipitation may persist throughout the festival. Sarat Sahu, Director of SOA University’s Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC), mentioned that another cyclonic circulation could develop over the west-central and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, on October 1. This system may strengthen into a low-pressure area by October 2 and move northeast towards the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal, he stated. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has yet to release any forecasts for the following week. Prior to this, additional rainfall is expected leading up to the Puja in Odisha. A new weather system is anticipated to form over the Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. The national weather agency reported that an upper air cyclonic circulation developed over the coastal regions of central Myanmar and the adjacent east-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday. It is expected to shift westward and evolve into a low-pressure area over the northern and adjacent central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. This system is projected to consolidate into a depression over the northwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, by Friday, and cross the coast around Saturday. This will result in rainfall and squally weather, with wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 km per hour along and off the Odisha coast, as well as in the northern and central Bay of Bengal from Friday to Sunday. Fishermen have been cautioned against going out to sea during this time. Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, stated that the low pressure is expected to form on Thursday and may have its most significant effects on Odisha on Friday and Saturday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds are likely to occur in the Koraput and Rayagada districts on Friday.
